The IGU-YECG promotes research, education and achievements of early career geographers internationally which deserves to be recognized and celebrated.
Background
The IGU Young and Early Career Geographers’ Taskforce (IGU-YECG) was launched on 22 August 2016 at the IGC in Beijing, China. The Taskforce, composed of nine members, aims to promote career development for early career geographers, stimulate international and inter-generational research conversations between geographers, and elevate the achievements of early career geographers around the world.
Objectives
The YECG Taskforce has identified five strategic areas for future work. These include:
- Hosting training and networking events at IGU annual conferences and also online
- More opportunities for participation through paper competitions, field visits, summer/winter schools
- Building publicity for the achievements of individuals who have made a novel/high impact contribution (i.e. through awards for the best PhD)
- Creating feedback channels to strongly raise issues/problems faced by young and early career researchers in different parts of the world. Make contact with Commission’s other Young Members Board (e.g. Commission on Political Geography, Commission on Urban Geography and Commission on Gender)
- Developing online resources and a platform by setting up email list, member and mentor database, jobs database, social media, webpage
Our Perspective
We believe that Geography is a discipline that can bring together researchers in the physical and social sciences. It holds the key to understanding our planet and tackling some of the critical environmental, developmental and social challenges we face today. We are committed as a team to empowering and nurturing future leaders in Geography. We hope to fulfil our mission by working together with academic mentors, early career scholars and groups who have a similar vision of the importance of Geography in our world today.
